It’s been 14 years since the Pan household break-in. Some folks are shocked by the horrors of this event. Today, the father of the Pan Household still lives in the house where the crime scene occurred. He’s currently 70 years old, and has trouble living a normal life. Parts of his body are ruptured including his bones near his neck and eye. Felix Pan, though wasn’t at his home at the time of the murders, became depressed and moved away from Toronto. The documentary “What Jennifer Did” highlights the true story of how Jennifer Pan orchestrated a grievous crime, and led it to be one of the unforgettable events in human history. People have been currently watching the new Jennifer Pan documentary released in spring 2024.

The film dives into the superficial details on the Jennifer Pan incident. Pan is a vietnamese- Canadian woman, who was raised by tiger parents, parents who push their kids hard to excel in academics and extracurricular activities. Her parents, Bich Pann and Hann Pann, worked at the auto parts manufacturing company. They had high expectatopns of Jennifer and her brother Felix to excel academically. Their parents made sure that their kids were also involved in a lot of exracirricular activities. Pan took piano and figure skating classes. She alo played the flute in her school band.  Most of her peers commented that Pan lived in a strict household. Pan wasn’t allowed to go to parties or date boys. Pan dated a former high school classmate and marijuana dealer, Daniel Wong. They ended their relationship after he found that Pan’s parents didn’t admire them. Afterward, he started dating another girl named Christene.  Her parents feared that doing these sorts of activiteis would detract Jennifer’s attention in her studies. As of the age of 22, Pan had never been drunk or gone out to parties. She even went on vacations with her parents only.

Pan excelled while she was in grade school, but later ended up flunking high school. She ended up failing calculus and got her early-decision admission to Torontro Metropolitan University rescinded. Her parents never know about this. This is due to Jennifer Pan forging report cards and printing fake admissions letters to make her parents think she’s doing well.

After “graduating” high school, she ends up divulging to her parents that she ended up getting an offer to the Univerisity of Toronto, also known as the Harvard of the North, and studying pharmacology. Her parents didn’t realize her deceit. They took her down to downtown Toronto. Over there, Pan would be teaching piano classes at a place. She, in addition, purchased textbooks and notebooks to take notes on different pharmacology topics. She’d later show this to her parents as proof that she was attending class. She continued this lie for like 4 years.

Pan, later,  told her parents that she was volunteering at The Hospital for Sick Children. Her parents found it suspicious she wasn’t volunteering. They encountered that he didn’t have a badge or a uniform. They confirmed their suspicions after they followed her to work. She was berated by her parents and threatened to kick her out. However, she was given a chance to complete high school. Her car mileage was checked to see how far she was going from home. She, in addition, was allowed to continue her job teaching piano to other students.

Pan, later, became pissed with her family’s opressive parenting style and their argument on Pan dating Danny Wong. Pan came into contact with a former grade school peer; he promised to help Pan kill her father at his work. The attempted murder of her father failed. Pan recieved assistance from Daniel Wong to kill her parents. Daniel connected Pan to Lenford Crawford, who deals marijuana with. Crawford contacted Eric Carty, who later contacted David Mylvagenham. On Nvember 2010, Jennifer Pan went downstairs quietly to open the fron door. The hitmen killed her mom and critically injured her father. The hitmen stole some money and ransacked the house. Pan later called the cops about the incident.

Pan’s father was sent to the trauma unit. The same night, Jennifer Pan was interviewed by investigators about the murders. This interview took about a few weeks. In the interview, Pan made confessions that she lied to her parents about attending university and having intentions of being with Daniel Wong. Investigators were disappointed that Jennifer Pan lied to her family for years; they, in addition, interviewed Danny Wong. Investigitors, at their own time, tried to review the 911 call Jennifer Pan made. They inspected the intricate call several times. They were in disbelief when they heard Jennifer Pan had hands tied when she was giving the 911 call after the attacks. A few days after the attack, Hann Pann, Jennifer Pan’s father, was interviewed after he woke up from the coma. He mentioned that Jennifer Pan had her hands untied during the murders; in addition, she was talking to the htmen in a friendly and soft manner. This later shocked the investigators very much.

During the third interview, an investigator, Bill Goetz, interviewed her. He made false claims that he had satellite imaging that could track Pan’s movements in the house. He used science-fiction analogies to worry Pan. In Canada, police are allowed to lie in order to make suspects divulge truthful statements. Goetz relentlessly told  Pan that she led the attack on her parents. Jennifer started getting overwhelmed and later came up with another lie. She clamed that she hired the hitman to murder her. She was pressured into excelling in life and wanted to end her life. Pan claimed that she hired hitmen, one named “HOMEBOY”, to murder her. Investigators reviewed Pan’s texts from her phone with “HOMEBOY” and Daniel Wong. A few hours later, Bill Goetz told Pan he was arresting her for murder and attempted murder. In 2014, Pan’s trial started and was sentenced, along with the co-conspirators, to life in prison and may recieve a chance of parole after 25 years. In addition, her dad and younger brother requested a restraining order to prevent Pan from ccontacting her family. This request was granted by the judge. As of 2024, Pan is serving her life sentence at the Grand Valley Institution for Women.

After watching this documentary, it’s quite sad seeing an adolescent murder the people who raised her. It’s understandable that we can be quite pressured by our parents to be better than the next person. Violence is usually not the best idea to confront people, especially the ones who nurtured you. Nowadays, we have so many immigrant families especially in the USA. A lot of immigrant families have worked hard to provide a better life for their children. Immigrant families usually push their kids into receiving better opportunities, education being an example. Kids need to see the real value of hard work and determination to achieve their goals.

However, this method can pressure children into achieving success. There needs to be a balance between striving for academic success and taking care of one’s mental health. Society needs to create an environement where communication between parents and children are encouraged. Empathy and mental health support are a stepping stone in helping young folks navigate their unique challenges. Teens should focus on finding healthy ways to cope with the pressures they face. Counseling and peer support groups can be helpful in building a society where immigrant families and children can strive without the fear of failure.

In conclusion, the tragic story of Jennifer Pan showcases the dangers of parental pressure and lack of communication in the families. The documentary, “What Jennifer Did,” exemplifies the need for empathy, mental health awareness, and supportive environments. Encountering a balance between mental health and academic success is crucial for happiness. Providing nurturing environments for children can prevent tragedies and turmoil.
